Document Summary

Most of the research and teaching on (digital) media is still focused on the global north and informed by western epistemologies. The growing decolonisation movement and postcolonial studies have successfully challenged this bias, although much needs to be done before the field and literature become truly diverse and inclusive. Seminar question: in your study / presentation groups, develop a research design that adopts the principles of postcolonial studies for a research question of your own choice (related to digital media). There are two reasons: dominance west, raises awareness of dominance of western/global north epistemologies (and absence of others"). If we read about the global south, or the other , is usually from a western/north perspective: not generalizable, stresses (local) context of research and lack of generalizability (see global media culture", etc. ) It asks us to reflect of our white privilege: understanding present.
