CO SCI 136 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Network Theory, Rupert Murdoch, Deconstruction
Document Summary
In this seminar, we discuss two of the key network theories, namely by castells and latour. Castells (2004): a set of interconnected nodes: the term nodes is chosen with purpose, it sets to underline that it can be a human, object, social movement, political party, etc. Network society moves away from hierarchical structures, but to horizontal societies: social spaces are composed of actors. Power in a network theory: the size and centrality of the node. Importance/size of node depends on: amount of relevant information it absorbs, how efficiently it processes information. Networks are horizontal: castells (2004): a network has no center, just nodes, there is not one dominating node or agent in these networks. The internet is a tree topology: central node: ku network, bottom line: the internet cables. Metaphor model episteme: metaphor: it is not a literal way, but more a metaphor.
