POLS 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Goldilocks Principle, Classical Liberalism
Document Summary
How much freedom for the individual v. how much government is involved: freedom vs. authority is at the basis of every political idea, they are antithetical ideals, a system of push and pull, giving and taking. Most want less government until a threat persists, so then we are compelled to ask for government. These sudden shifts in needs can lead to extremes, which thus lead to destabalization. The united states ability to compromise has kept us away from these extremes. Last times compromise didn"t prevail we lost 2% of our population, the civil war: classical liberalism- the government that governs least, is best. ** the articles of confederation were a derivative of classical liberalism: socialism or marxism- each according to his ability and his need. Everyone has the necessary tools and they are all on a level playing field. A small company will continue to be yours, until it gets too big, then the government begins to intervene.
