Document Summary

Authority vs. freedom: the british government created fear of tyranny, too much authority. Therefore we created the continental congress under the articles of confederation but it was weak because we didn"t want to replace on tyrant with another. Nationalists called for the creation of a stronger government because the continental congress was too weak. Continental congress was created out of necessity it was impromptu and makeshift. The congress thought it was only temporary so they didn"t think it needed that much power. Kept weak purposefully because they didn"t want to replace the british tyranny with an american one. Successes of the confederation congress: won the war by creating the treaty of paris, won alliance with france, won western territory (louisiana purchase) Territory north of ohio was made into 5 separate states o old north west= illinois, wisconsin, Michigan, ohio, and indiana: no slavery above mason dixon line, only below. Farmers didn"t want to pay taxes in massachusetts.
