Behavior can be incompatible with innate adaptive behaviors. Raccoon rubbing coin in paws, which is innate for raccoons and food. Robert bolles- animals have built-in defense reactions to threatening stimuli. Conditioning is most effective when association between response and reinforcement is similar to animal"s built in predispositions. Cognitive map-rats had visual/spatial representation of particular maze. 3rd- reinforced after 10 trials of non-reinforcement. Quickly caught up to group that was reinforced everytime learned a cognitive map and used it when reinforcement began. Latent learning- learning that takes place without reinforcement learns something simply by observing it insight learning- solution suddenly emerges after either a period of inaction or contemplation. In operant conditioning, dopamine release sets the value of a reinforcer. Drugs that block dopamine disrupt operant conditioning. Tourettes syndrome- dopamine blockers, but rarely stay on drugs because they feel it blocks them from enjoying life. Nucleus accumbens- when people experience optimal pleasure while listening to music, dopamine activity in nucleus accumbens.
