PSYC 30 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Stereotype Threat, Psych
Document Summary
The victims perspectives: prejudice and discrimination from the inside. One of the biggest disadvantages is material (economic, job) not necessarily psychological directly. People consistently say they experience less discrimination than average member of their group. Members of disadvantaged groups want to see themselves as experiencing less discrimination because allows them to feel like they have more control over life. People want to distance themselves from negative attributes associated with their group. Denying the prejudice gives an excuse to ignore it within your group. Might also be a result of exaggerating the discrimination at the group level (deserving of special programs) Pressure experienced by individuals who fear that if they perform poorly on a task, their performance will appear to confirm an unfavourable belief about their group: choke under pressure. Maybe people who don"t care about their performance don"t feel the threat. Emotional arousal: when the treat is real, they perform worse, show more signs of anxiety/sympathetic arousal, reduce mental capacity.
