Norm of obedience to authority: principle that we should obey legitimate authorities. Authority can we used to extract obedience to small demands. One person assigned to the role of teacher (participant) the other was assigned learner (confederate) Whenever learner made a mistake, teacher would administer a shock. 65% brought the switch all the way, when 0% predicted they would. Second version had learner be more vocal, 62. 5% obeyed. 37/40 obeyed when they weren"t directly giving the shock. What makes obedience go away? third version had them in the room (40%) fourth had them hold hand (30%) When teachers could select the shock level, little aggression was shown. Insert a researcher who questions the other and obedience rates drop. Interesting application of this to nurse physician relationship. Participants were placed in a slow escalation of aggression that could account for the obedience. Milgram claims there was no long-term harm, replication has been done using role-play.
