BIO 12D Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Ovarian Ligament, Suspensory Ligament, Ovarian Vein
Document Summary
Ovaries paired, oval organs located w/in pelvic cavity lateral to uterus. Anchored w/in pelvic cavity by specific cords and sheets of ct. Broad ligament: peritonium, drapes over the uterus. Ovarian ligament each ovary is anchored to lateral aspect of uterus by this ligament: ovary to uterus. Suspensory ligament attaches to lateral edge of each ovary and projects superolaterally to pelvic wall: ovary to pelvic wall, houses ovarian blood vessels and nerves. Smooth muscle fibers w/in both mesovarium and suspensory ligament contract at time of ovulation to bring ovaries into close proximity w/in uterine tube openings. Supplied by ovarian artery and ovarian vein: ovarian arteries are direct branches off aorta, immediately inferior to renal vessels, ovarian veins drain into either inferior vena cava or renal vein. Within the cortex are thousands of ovarian follicles. Consist of: follicle cells, granulosa cells, nurse cells that support the oocyte, a type of oocyte.
