BIO 11 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Central Canal, Anterior Grey Column, Anterior Funiculus
Document Summary
Butterfly-shaped spinal gray matter is surrounded by tracts of white matter. Central canal filled with csf runs down the middle of the cord. Two butterfly wings are connected by a thin strip of gray matter (gray commissure) - surrounds central canal. Anterior side wings are broader, posterior side are thinner and extend nearly to the outer surface. Makes up the anterior wing of the butterfly. Neurons - somatic motor functions (those of the skeletal muscles) Makes up the posterior wing of the butterfly. Neurons - processing both somatic and visceral incoming sensory information. Present only from the first thoracic vertebra to the lumbar portion of the cord. Neurons -- motor control of the viscera via ans. Horns give rise to anterior (motor) and posterior (sensory) nerve roots. Posterior root has a swollen area - posterior or dorsal root ganglion cell bodies of these neurons are housed.
