Document Summary

Functional brain systems - groups of grey matter that share the same function and the white matter that connects. Limbic system includes a region of the medial cerebrum sometimes referred to as the limbic lobe, hippocampus, amygdala (collection of grey matter), and tracts that connect these structures with one another and the brain. Limbic lobe has cingulate gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus. Hippocampus is connected to a c-shaped ring of white matter called the fornix - main output tract. The limbic system functions in memory + learning (hippocampus) and emotion + behavior (amygdala). It is the visceral brain as it mediates the responses of the viscera to certain situations. Butterflies in ur stomach - partially a product of limbic system. Found at the physical centre of the brain and consists of: Posterior and superior epithalamus (epi- = above ) The main gateway into the cerebral cortex, controlling the flow of information both to and from the cerebral cortex.
