Document Summary

Agonist (prime mover): responsible for bringing about a specific movement, providing most of the force. Synergists: supplement force and guide the agonist, may reduce undesirable movement. Antagonist: opposite side of the joint and opposes the agonist - may slow down the movement of the agonist. Fixators: hold a bone in place - anchoring function to make movement more efficient and reduce risk of injury. A skeletal muscle is usually attached to a different bone at each end, often via a tendon. Origin: usually the less moveable, anchoring point on a bone. Insertion end: attached to the bone or structure that will be moved when the muscle contracts. Load: weight of the body part being moved. First class: the fulcrum is between the point of applied force and the load to be move. Triceps brachii moving the forearm, the elbow joint is the fulcrum between the force being applied and the load being moved.
