PREPARING TO PARTICIPATE
Chapter 11: Using Appropriate Language
11.1
Knowledge
What are the characteristics or principles of language that serve to explain its’
importance?
The characteristic/principles of language that serve to explain to us it’s importance are
symbolic importance’s, arbitrary importance’s, and the triangle of meaning. Symbolic
says that our words stand for symbolic things and that they are not just the actual things
they mean (fish example). Arbitrary is when words have no meaning for themselves.
They get their meanings through the way people use them. Finally, the triangle of
meaning is when the symbol (word), the thoughts (meaning you give to word), and the
referent (actual thing) all come together in a triangle form. \

Knowledge
What are the 3 differences between oral style and written style?
The three differences between oral style and written style are:
1. Oral style uses shorter sentences than written. If you use long sentences in oral
you can lose your breath or train of thought, and the audience might get bored.
2. Oral is less formal than writing because when we speak we tend to pronounce
things with the slang we grew up with (“Fire it up!”). We also use contractions in
the oral style. In written style contractions are seen as informal and
unprofessional.
3. We tend to be more repetitive in Oral style but we can eliminate this through our
organizational skills. Written style gives us the chance to go back and look at
what we wrote so we can fix any type of errors.
Application
Should your classroom speeches be more formal or informal in oral style?
I think our classroom speeches should be formal because we are taking this class to
practice the skills we are going to need in the future. If we start doing formal speeches
now, it will be easier for us to understand how to do them in the future. BUT, this doesn’t
mean we have to pick topics that we have no interest in. Even formal presentations may
seem a little boring, you can still put passion behind it.
