Ten simple things to help ensure appropriateness and clarity: strive for accuracy. Using words that most precisely convey the meaning we intend. Denotation is the dictionary de nition of a word. Connotation is what the word suggests or implies or the meanings we attach to words based on our experiences: use words correctly, use standard english. Always assume a lay audience: be specific and concrete, be economical. Simple structure, sentences: be respectful and inclusive.
