PSY E112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Urie Bronfenbrenner, Social Cognitive Theory, Falsifiability
Document Summary
Explaining development through interactions b/w children and the setting in which they live in (not falsifiable) Viewed developing person as existing in a number of overlapping systems- ecological system (each system has same influence) Person and their relationships with immediate surroundings (ex. Connections between diff. relationships a person has in their microsystem. Settings that one does not directly experience but they still influence. Larger social constructs that indirectly shape environment. Historical changes that influence dev. and the systems that surround us. Greater role in own development as one ages. Social cognitive theory: behaviour, environment and cognition are key factors in development. Observation comes first in learning process (anything that defers attention impedes learning) Children"s environment influences them; they exert influence on environment causing it to affect them differently. Child is born in class, teacher treats child differently b/c she they believe child is disinterested, child responds by acting out; cycle continues.
