Early stages of development (most rapid, critical periods) Effects of one age have ramifications on other ages. Mental health greatly influenced by childhood dev. Rubbing person"s cheek- head doesn"t turn in that direction and mouth does not. Reflex: specific actions that automatically occur in response to certain open stimuli. At birth, strong reflexes indicate typical neural development. Rubbing infants cheek- turn head toward touch and open mouth (routing reflex- crucial to feeding but soon replaced by voluntary behaviours; examples- rooting and sucking) Babinski reflex: infant fans and then curls toes when foot is stroked. Tonic neck reflex: infant turns head to one side, extend arm on same side as their gaze and flex arm and knee on opp. Moro reflex: infant reaches to latch onto something if they feel like they are dropping.
