Chapter 2: Action at an Emergency
Bystander Actions
- The bystander is a vital link between emergency medical services (EMS) and the injured or
suddenly ill person. Bystander recognizes the situation as an emergency and can act to get help.
- Lack of Knowledge – the average person is unaware of many aspects of emergency care and has
difficulty recognizing common medical emergencies and deciding to call 9-1-1. Someone who
feels incompetent may even offer minimal help.
- Confusion about what is an emergency – it is not always clear of the severity of an emergency
which can lead to delays in calling 911.
- People are put off by smell, breath, blood, etc, and may not call for help quickly
- People also have outdated methods of helping such as hydrogen peroxide being put on a wound,
ad tiltig a perso’s head ak to stop a oseleed.
What Should Be Done?
- Role of the First Aid Provider
o 1. Recognize the emergency – pay attention to severity, physical distance, relationship,
time exposed, scene conditions, and a perso’s appearae
o 2. Decide to help. – deidig to help is a attitude aout eergeies ad aout oe’s
ability to deal with emergencies.
▪ There are reasons not to help – if the bystander could be put in danger or killed,
if helping is not worth the effort, if helping requires advanced training and skills,
or if no other bystanders are helping.
o 3. Before helping, take appropriate actions – call 911.
o 4. Determine what is wrong with the person – decide wheter life threatening conditions
exist
o 5. Give first aid.
Seeking Medical Care
- Knowing when to call 911 is important – need to be able to tell difference between minor injury
or illness and a life threatening one.
- When something serious happens – DO NOT call a friend, family, doctor or hospital first – call 911.
Many injured people should not be moved and EMS will know what to do.
How to Call EMS
- Call 911 – gie the perso’s loatio, the uer eig alled, a desriptio of hat happeed,
the number of people needing help, and a description of their condition
- DO NOT hang up on the EMS.
Rescuer Reactions
- First aid providers must stay alert and keep working at the injury scene. All the knowledge a
provider has is useless if they collapse or are injured.
