King asked his listeners, as he spoke from the steps of the lincoln memorial to remember the time when the emancipation. Proclamation was signed in 1963 by president lincoln. This proclamation freed all slaves and in the process gave them hope of escaping from their misery. The proclamation also entitled the negro to equal rights, and job oppurtunities.
