The nature and function of nonverbal communication. Chapter 3: communicating nonverbally: behaviors and characteristics that convey meaning without the use of words. Roughly 65%-70% of meaning comes from nonverbal cues and about 30%-35% comes from language. The facial expression of basic emotions is understood around the world. When someone"s words don"t match their nonverbal cues, we usually believe the nonverbal cues are sincere. When people lie, they often have inconsistent nonverbal behaviors. Functions of nonverbal communication: manage conversation, maintain relationship, form impressions. Facial displays: the face communicates more than any other nonverbal channel, we tend to find people with more symmetrical faces to be more attractive, our face is our primary way to show emotions. Eye behavior: eyes communicate more than other part of the face, your pupils dilate when you look someone you find attractive.
