Chapter 6: nonverbal communication: the nature of nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication behaviors and characteristics that convey meaning without using words. Nonverbal communication is present in most conversations. When we talk on the phone or send emails, it is difficult to use nonverbal cues. Nonverbal cues can be used through text messages (emoticons) Nonverbal communication often conveys more information than verbal communication. Nonverbal channels- various behavioral forms that nonverbal communication takes. Ex: facial expressions, gestures, and personal appearance. Nonverbal communication is usually believed over verbal communication. Saying you"re happy to see someone and having a nasty look on your face. Nonverbal communication is the primary means of communicating emotion. Our nonverbal behaviors describe our emotions much better than our verbal. We don"t get more information about one"s emotional state from their voice, but we tend to get more accurate information. Ex: your friend cuffs up her hands, lowers her voice, and leans towards you.
