PSYC 1101 Lecture 9: Chapter 9
Document Summary
Chapter 9: motivation and emotion: needs or desire that energizes and directs behavior, arises from the interplay between nature and nurture. Perspective #1: drive-reduction theory: we have physiological needs (water, or food) Incentives: environmental stimuli that attract or repel us, depending on our individual learning histories, example: you smell freshly baked bread at your friend"s kitchen when you are hungry you will feel strong drive. Perspective #2: arousal theory: people seek an optimal level of arousal that maximizes their performance, yerkes-dodson law, moderate arousal leads to optimal performance. Perspective #3: hierarchy of needs: abraham maslow"s hierarchy of needs, we prioritize survival-based needs and then social needs more than the needs for esteem and meaning. Pangs of an empty stomach are not the only source of hunger. Body chemistry and the brain: glucose major source of energy that circulating in your bloodstream. If your glucose level drops your brain would trigger your feeling of hunger.
