PHIL 3000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Golf Cart, Antonin Scalia, Reasonable Accommodation
Document Summary
According to antonin scalia, what distinguishes games from productive activities is the very nature of a game: to have no object except amusement. Due to this it is impossible to have arbitrary regulations for games such as golf. However, aristotle argues that scalia misses a very important aspect of games which is appreciation. Through aristotle"s theory of justice, it can be argues that sports are not only about entertainment, they are also about honoring and recognizing excellence. Based on this, the argument that sports are just for fun and don"t need specific regulations can be countered. In relation to the rulings of the golf cart in the supreme court, i believe that it is important for organizations and championships to consider health disabilities and make reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities. This is only if the accommodation does no fundamentally alter the nature of the activity.
