Document Summary

The answer to this question lies within the civic duties and rights of a functioning member in society. Some believe that as an individual living within a specific society, the government has the right to send us to battle. Others believe that we have a fundamental right of self-possession, the right to ourselves and that it is a violation of that right for the government to coerce people to go to battle via drafting. John locke argues that the government has the right to send people to battle against their will because of rightful authority to do so. I believe that in situations where we have limited military, it is justifiable for the government to draft individuals. This is because as citizens of a country, the country we live in provides us with a land to live on, protection so that we do not live a fearful life, and other benefits.
