Is walking an essential part of playing golf? PRP 19
No it is not essential. There are no rules governing how players walk when playing golf and
should not be a determining factor in deciding who can and cannot play golf. There was a
comparison made to basketball in the same way that the ultimate goal is making shots. However,
how a player runs and walks on the basketball court is subject to scrutiny and observation by a
referee and for this reason a player walks and moves around on a court is very important to the
game. Shooting is not the only part of basketball that is considered to be essential. It is harder for
a man in a cart to tackle and be tackled and there are other technical aspects of basketball that
involve walking and running that would change dramatically if players were allowed to play with
carts while others played on their feet. In golf, no one considers how the players move around
and so using a golf cart should not be considered a play that drastically changes the game.
Moreover, using a cart on a court where other players are on their feet changes the dynamic
entirely and so would not be allowed. It is also not essential under the simple fact that no one
walks while actually trying to achieve the purpose of the game which is to make strikes that put
the ball in the hole. The Supreme Court’s decision was fair in the sense that Casey has no
advantage over the other players. Casey using a golf cart does not give him an upperhand in any
sense because it is not directly correlated to the actual sport. It does not change how the sport is
played or prevent others from playing the sport to the best of their ability. The Supreme Court
allowed Casey compete in a space that was conducive for him and fair to everyone and still
fulfill the main purpose of the game which makes it a fair decision.
