Groups are important because they affect the way we view the world, our sense of self, and our understanding of where we fit into the larger social scene. Primary: small groups that we engage with in face-to-face and emotional ways. Typically serve expressive (emotional) needs, and have the most impact on our socialization. Secondary: large/impersonal groups we usually engage with for pragmatic reasons. Organizations are collectives purposely constructed to achieve particular ends. Domination: the probability that commands will be obeyed. Strong domination refers to the high probability that command will be obeyed. Weak domination refers to the likelihood that commands will not be obeyed. Grounded in the rules that legitimate the office. Based in long standing traditions, in the divine or god given right to hold power. Based in the devotion and faith of followers in what they view as the exceptional characteristics of a leader.
