Part B is Optional
Optional Supplementary Medical Insurance (Part B) benefits are available to:
Most citizens age 65 and over; certain aliens age 65 even those who are not
entitled (based on eligibility for Social Security or Railroad Retirement
benefits) to Part A Medicare services;
and disabled beneficiaries entitled to Medicare's Part A.
Part B enrollment 2013: 47.9 million
Part B often thought of primarily physician services (in both hospital and non-
hospital settings).
But SMI also covers many other non-physician services, including:
Preventive services such as screenings - mammography, cardiac,
colorectal, diabetic; clinical laboratory tests, PSA tests, COPD,
glaucoma
Durable medical equipment & most supplies
Flu shots, foot care, hearing exams, dialysis, drugs whih a’t e
self-administered,
Transplants & drugs
Diagnostic tests, some other therapy services,
Cardiac rehab, defib implant, chiropractic
Ambulance services, nutritionist, mental health
Certain other health care services,
Blood which is not supplied under Part A
Physician services, including telehealth & 2nd opinion

Almost all persons entitled to Part A also choose to enroll in Part B

diagnostic tests, ambulance services, some other therapy services,
certain other health care services, and blood which is not supplied
