The globalized war economy: old wars vs. new wars. Any war is going to be associated with some sort of economy. In a way, this is marxism 101, which holds that the material conditions of existence or how the economy is organized gives rise to certain sorts of political superstructures. With this thought in mind, let"s turn to the contrast kaldor develops at the beginning of this chapter. The world wars of the 20th century were based on mobilization economies that is, mobilizing all national forces for the war effort. As many people as possible are mobilized to participate in the war effort enter rosey the riveter. Participation is low because fighters are not paid or are paid infrequently and military forces lack widespread legitimacy. Additionally, new wars do not take place against the backdrop of booming domestic production, but rather protracted economic recession.
