HSC 3243 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Adult Education, Motivation, Reinforcement
Document Summary
Module 5 notes - education in the health professions. The answer to this question is because education in the health-related professions is adult education. Students in health professions" programs are adults and in order to help them learn efficiently and effectively, it is imperative to understand the basic principles of adult learning. An adult"s readiness to learn is dependent upon previous learning, and their sense of self has a significant influence on the learning situation. Many adult learners feel embarrassed about returning to school and/or taking classes with younger students. They also hold negative impressions about their own abilities. Research indicates more permanent learning comes from intrinsic motivation. Positive reinforcement, the presentation of material in an organized fashion, and repetition are effective ways to enhance learning for adults. Meaningful tasks and materials are more fully and easily learned than those which are not of interest to the adult learner.
