North-west europe: elite marriage (france, england, germany, scandinavia) For the elite o early for women (15-16 mostly) o late for men, were exceptions, say if you were an heir you would be married off as early as possible to secure an alliance. Marriages were of significant social, political and economic events. Marriages are arranged between fathers and son-in-law. Bottom 90% of population o for women: 22-24. Pretty normal for us, we are inheritors of this pattern. You are wasting a decade of reproductive potential. It"s a society where offspring are needed, yet there is this decade where they don"t. We think this was a decision that was originally made by fathers, perhaps because their labour was needed on their farms o for men: only about 2 years older. Part of adolescence (becoming an adult) o moving from dependence on your parents to becoming an adult.
