NURS 420 Lecture 4: N420 Heart Failure
Document Summary
Heart failure unable to pump enough oxygenated blood to meet the demands of the body complex clinical syndrome that results in the inability of the heart to provide sufficient blood to meet the oxygen needs of tissues and organs. Ejection fraction (ef) is amount of blood pumped by lv with each heart beat normal: 55-65% Heart failure with reduced ef (hfref) - systolic ejection fraction <45% Heart failure with preserved ef (hfpef) - diastolic ejection fraction 45%-50% Better survival after cardiac events better timely tx available. Most common cause for hospital admission in adults over age 65. Properly treated and managed, incidence of hf can be reduced by 50% Anything that interferes with mechanisms that regulate cardiac output (co) Conditions that directly damage the heart: mi, cad, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, valvular issues. Cad w resultant necrotic dmg to the lv is the underlying cause of hf in most pts. Conditions that increase workload of ventricles: infection, anemia.
