CHEM 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Methylamine, Molecular Mass, Ammonium Chloride
Document Summary
Carbon is tetravalent all carbons have four bonds. Smaller alkanes are gases, bigger ones are liquids, biggest ones are solids. Structural isomers (constitutional isomers): compounds have the same molecular formal, but different structural formula different bonding arrangement. Halogenated hydrocarbons: many are not flammable and good solvents, but can be toxic or pollutants. Chcl3; trichloromethane (chloroform) **can be lethal, even in little dose. Ccl4; tetrachloromethane (carbon tetrachloride) **toxic to liver and kidneys. F h: use the carbon with the most substitutes, put substitutions in (i. e. bromo, chloro fluoro ) alphabetical order. Alkenes: iupac naming system: choose the longest c chain that contains the double bond. This is the parent alkene: number c atoms starting form the end closed to the double bond. Indicate double bond by smaller number: name the attached groups along with the number of c to which they are attached, **priority, double bond on lowest number possible, then branched groups.
