Document Summary

Spontaneous mutation: occurs without a known cause. Consequence of mutation depends on what gene is effected. Caused by exposure to either physical or chemical mutagens. Specifically depends on dosage and duration: mutation involves random, spontaneous, non-adaptive processes. Mutation"s role in evolution: mutation is the raw material of evolution. Can lead to changes in phenotype: natural selection does not drive mutations. It is possible to have too many mutations. Compromising genetic information can be lethal: why are bad mutations not selected out, humans are diploid, most disorders are recessive. Carriers- carry a disorder without expressing it: dominantly inherited disorders are still possible. Can occur because they do not effect reproduction: mutations can occur in any cell at any time. Significance depends on cell type and when the mutation is occurring: mutations in animals, germ-line cells- cells that give rise to gametes. These are the ones that can be based on to progeny.
