EBIO 1210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Vacuole, Endosymbiont, Cell Wall
Document Summary
The microbial cells outnumber our cells living in our bodies, most of these microbials are beneficial to us and our body. Probiotic, protects the human gut against pathogenic bacteria. What we eat affects these probiotics (keep a diverse diet) Opens new therapeutic options, applies principles of ecology. This form of microbiology aims to strengthen the human microbiome to prevent infection and to limit the use of antibiotics that kill both beneficiary and pathogenic microbes. Microbes are also used in production of fermented products (foods, beverages, and fuels) Single cell organisms, no nucleus, prokaryotes (single celled organism with no bound nucleus, a cell membrane, and no major cell organelles) All living cells have nucleic acids (dna) to store genetic information. Role: burn energy-rich molecules with to gain lots of atp for cellular work. Prokaryotes do not have mitochondria; can"t burn food with and use fermentation instead. Role: convert solar energy into energy rich sugars in photosynthesis.
