Simultaneity, Sequentiality and MH Model
- What are some problems with the Stokoe Notation?
o Locations too broad
o Movements too broad
o No notation for NMS
o Can’t accurately represent simultaneous and sequential elements
- Simultaneous and Sequential Elements
o Simultaneous
▪ Elements that happen at the same time during a sign
o Sequential
▪ Elements that happen one after another
o Languages have both simultaneous and sequential elements and any phonetic
system should be able to accurately describe that
- Do spoken languages have both
o Yes! One sound has manner, place, and voicing (simultaneous) and a word has a
sequence of sounds (sequential)
o /t/
