Document Summary

Bio 121 - week 5 lecture 9 pt. All life is composed of one or more cells. All cells are produced by the reproduction of other cells. Cells are too small to be seen with the naked eye, so microscopes must be used to observe them. A beam of light is passed through a specimen, which is magnified by the lenses. Not as much magnification power as electron microscopes, but living cells may be observed: ex: paramecium. A beam of electrons is passed through a specimen, rather than a beam of light. Much greater magnification power than a light microscope, but cells must be dead in order to prepare them for observation. Used for looking at the details of a cell"s outer surface. Like sem, a beam of electrons is used, there is high magnification power, and the cells must be dead. Used for looking at the details of a cell"s internal structure.
