Before one can study the family, one has to first decide what it is. In canada, one common view of the family is the tnf. Marriage- family based on marriage of male and female. Children biological offspring are part of the family. Just 1 and 2 is commonly referred to as the nuclear family. Canada today: great diversity of family structures. Dominance of tnf is a thing of the past (only 1950s) Children: less having children, also more adopting. Different family roes: diminished patriarchy in many households. Extended families: multiple generations, children staying well into adulthood. Canadians have diverse views of the tnf. Some belief it is the best form. Sociologists also have diverse views on it.
