Foragers: small groups of people, limited division of labor (everyone does much of the same thing) One anthropological study found over a dozen individuals regularly caring for one children. Peasant producer: family as small productive unit w/ biological basis. Land ownership makes family more isolated from community. Marriage becomes more powerful because of property. More children than foragers b/c more valuable, less costly. 1st phase: men leave to work, strong gender roles, interdependence. 2nd phase: both men and women work outside the house, weakening gender roles, promotes divorce, decreases # of children. In addition to new structures, margolis and others claim economic changes created new familial roles. Motherhood: idea of the nurturing mother, that a mother"s primary duty is childcare, better at it than men. Emergence of motherhood: margolis describes how the contemporary idea of motherhood in na emerged between 1820-1960. Margolis argues motherhood was caused by industrialization. Main jobs were farming, supervising & educating kids.
