PSY 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Wilhelm Wundt, Sigmund Freud, Conversion Disorder
Document Summary
Wilhelm wundt founds the first laboratory for experimental psychology in 1879. Believed that the mind is open for self-observation. Saw a word and respond with the first thing you think. This was hard because we aren"t always conscious of everything we think. Ex: we are not aware of how we can formulate sentences which is a complicated process. Sigmund freud adopts a clinical approach to studying the mind. He went to medical school and realized that many of his patients, had illnesses that couldn"t be explained medically. (conversion disorder) Believed that we are all driven by some unconscious urge that is typically sexual and come out in different times ex: dreaming, mental illness, slip in words = true desire. There is no data to support many of his early theories. Redefined psychology as study of observable behavior. Redefined psychology as the study of behavior. The 1960"s brought a renewed interest in mind, mental activity, and consciousness.
