PSY 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Naturalistic Observation, Psych, Operational Definition
Document Summary
Hindsight bias: after you know the results oh i knew it all along . Is more effective and generalizable than intuition. Different methodological designs are better for different things. No one study proves anything, but multiple experiments pointing to one thing is convincing. You could ask people who smoke marijuana if they think it does. Determine if there"s a flaw in information collection. No person assumptions or bias/can look for hidden bias. Consider alternative explanation for facts or results. Explanation using principles to organize observations and predict events. Test the memory of someone who smokes. Test a group of people who smoke and compare them to a group who doesn"t. People with low self-esteem will score higher on a depression scale. Administer tests of self-esteem and depression, see if a low score on one: research and observations predicts a high score on the other. Operational definition: statement of the exact procedures used in a research study.
