Movies provided a great escape for people: help people make it through the hard times. Hollywood musicals/ song and dance spectacles: fred astaire and ginger roberts, can-can dancing, screwball comedies became popular. Studio system came into their own: production almost completely centered in 7 dominant film companies, paramount, warner brothers, universal, columbia, 20 century fox, Mgm, rko: each had their own film styles they specialized in. By 1940, the average household was going to the movie theatre 2. 5 times a week. The red scare: macarthyism, fear of communism taking over the world, people involved in media usually were more liberal than others, went after the film industry filled with communists , house on american activities committee. Interviewed people to see if they were communist: asked them to name names, time of blacklist. If your name was on this list, you weren"t hired by hollywood. Many talented people were banned from industry.
