Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium Fig 4.4
Microscopic Appearance looks stratified but all cell arise from basement membrane,
often ciliated
Locations respiratory passages
Functions secretion of mucus, trapping of dust & moving them away from the lung
Stratified Squamous Epithelium Table 4.2, Fig 4.5
Microscopic Appearance many layers, metabolically active cuboidal cells at base,
flat dead cells at surface
Locations epidermis, oral cavity vagina
Functions resist abrasion, prevent infection, stop water loss
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium Glands ONLY
Microscopic Appearance two layer cube like cells
Locations sweat, mammary & salivary glands
Functions protection & secretion
Transitional Epithelium Fig 4.6
Microscopic Appearance many layers with tear-drop cells that do not flatten toward
surface
Locations urinary bladder
Functions allow stretching of urinary bladder
Connective Tissue Table 4.5
Connective Tissue Proper (Fibrous)
o Dense fig 4.13, 4.14
Regular parallel, ligaments & tendons
Irregular deep layers of skin & white of eye
Elastic tunica media of arteries, dark squiggly lines
o Loose fig 4.15, 4.16
Reticular glycoprotein coated fibroblasts provides framework for soft
organs; thymus, spleen, lymph nodes
Areolar large pink collagen fibers, small dark reticular fibers and
immune cells, insulates organs from infection
o Adipose fat, cellular, store lipids Fig 4.17, Table 4.8
Supporting Connective tissue
o Cartilage Table 4.9, Fig 4.19, Fig 4.20, Fig 4.21
Hyaline pairs of cells that appear like ‘eyes’, end of long bones, rib,
trachea & larynx
Elastic netlike pattern of fibers around chondrocytes, flexible
framework for external ear, nose & epiglottis
Fibrocartilage numerous collagen fibers in rows, protect from wear &
tear in pubic symphysis & intervertebral discs
o Bone Marrow fig4.18, adipocytes & stem cells
o Bone fig 4.22, concentric circles, located in skeleton

Document Summary

Microscopic appearance looks stratified but all cell arise from basement membrane, often ciliated. Functions secretion of mucus, trapping of dust & moving them away from the lung. Microscopic appearance many layers, metabolically active cuboidal cells at base, flat dead cells at surface. Functions resist abrasion, prevent infection, stop water loss. Microscopic appearance two layer cube like cells. Microscopic appearance many layers with tear-drop cells that do not flatten toward surface. Connective tissue proper (fibrous: dense fig 4. 13, 4. 14, regular parallel, ligaments & tendons, elastic tunica media of arteries, dark squiggly lines. Fluid connective tissue extracellular matrix is fluid, no visible fibers: blood many cells, no nucleus in rbc"s lymph. Always separated from each other by large amounts of extracellular matrix. Nervous tissue main component of brain, spinal cord & nerves, do not divide, high metabolic rate, highly cellular- little extracellular matrix.
