Intensity - amount of effort ( how hard should i work? ) Direction - where energy goes ( what should i do? ) Persistence - length effort is needed for ( how long should (or can) i continue? ) Extrinsic - engaging in activity for a tangible reward (eg. salary, all types of pay) Operant conditioning - shape behaviors through rewards and punishments. Token economy - reinforcing desired behaviors through a regular schedule of reinforcement (eg. giving gold stars for sitting still that can be turned into candy at the end of the week) Reinforcement (increase desirable behavior)- a behavior followed by a reward is likely to be repeated (positive reinforcement). Also, a behavior followed by eliminating a negative stimulus is likely to be repeated (negative reinforcement). Punishment (decrease undesirable behavior) - a behavior followed by a negative stimulus (positive punishment) is likely to decrease. Also, a behavior followed by a eliminating a positive stimulus is likely to decrease.
