PSY 315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Social Desirability Bias, Glossary Of Musical Terminology, Confirmation Bias
Document Summary
The science of the social side of life (continued) Predicted likelihood of negative events, wait 2 months. When even occurred, recalled likelihood estimates were larger than original estimates. Confirmation bias tendency to search for information that confirms beliefs, you are actively looking for information to prove your beliefs. Ignore other evidence that doesn"t support what we already believe. To be scientific you must try to find disconfirming evidence. Belief-bias effect people accept only the evidence that conforms to their belief, rejecting or ignoring any evidence that does not; you are presented with information and you ignore it. Example: i will accept that some good ice skaters are not professional hockey players, but will reject an assertion that some professional hockey players are not good ice skaters (which, although it seems unlikely, is possible). Fallacy of positive instances - tendency to remember uncommon events that seem to confirm our beliefs and to forget events that disconfirm our beliefs.
