Muscularis layer has three layers of muscle. Mucosa layer has rugae, rough ridges, allows distention of stomach, contains gastric pits which produce gastric juices. Pepsinogen + hydrochloric acid = pepsin which breaks down proteins into amino acids. Gastrin determines how much of the above substances are produced. Eating a bigger meal will lead to more production of the gastric juices. Covered in villi - extension of surface, allows for absorption. Know what are they breaking down/where they are found. Secretes three main enzymes into small intestine. Secretin -- causes bicarbonate ions to be released. Cck -- tells pancreas to release digestive enzymes. Liver produces bile which is stored in gallbladder. Bile secreted into small intestines to emulsify fats. Main function is to dispose of waste materials, forms and removals fecal matter. Ibs and ibd -- one is acute, other is prolonged. Know why obesity is an issue -- heart disease/diabetes. Know what carbs proteins and lipids are used for.
