Document Summary

Types of symbiosis - intimate direct relationship; close proximity. Interactions have costs and benefits for members involved. Intraspecific competition - competition within a species. Commensalism - no effect on one, positive for the other. Amensalism - no effect on one, negative for the other. Lichen and tree it grows on = commensalism (lichen benefits and tree is unaffected) Lichen - fungi and algae/cyanobacteria = mutualism. Giant moray eel + bluestreak cleaner wrasses = mutualism. Bluestreak cleaner wrasses clean the mouth of the eel for food. Cattle egrets follow grazing animals, and when the larger animals move about and push insects out of the grass egrets eat insects as they jump out of the ground. Interaction btw lion, hyena, vultures over dead zebra = interspecific competition (can limit resources an organism needs to grow) Animals + gut microbes = mostly mutualism (some microbes are pathogenic) 10x as many bacterial cells in your body than your own cells.
