Document Summary
Gifted: a term which traditionally has referred to individuals with scores of 130 or greater on intelligence tests. Modern definitions are broader and include exceptional talent in an assortment of areas, including art, music, creative writing, and dance. Exceptional talent must be nurtured and supported in childhood or it will wither. Gifted children tend to be more mature than their peers, have less emotional problems, and are more satisfied with their careers and relationships as adults. Convergent thinking: using information to determine a standard, correct answer (associated with intelligence) Divergent thinking: where the aim is not to find a single correct answer (often there isn"t one) but instead, novel and unusual lines of thought (associated with creativity) Creative children must also be nurtured by encouraging them to take risks with ideas and to think of alternatives to conventional wisdom. Mental retardation: refers to substantially below average intelligence, and to problems adapting to an environment that emerge before age 18.
