Document Summary

Two theories on how dogs came to be domesticated. Adoption theory: by taming pups and taking them home. A wolf that is less scared of people people/steal food/ will be better to survive. Tameness - gradual habituation to humans, characterized by reduced fearfulness. Wild animals can be tame but not domesticated. Genotype showed we didn"t actually select for curly hair or phenotypes it was a change genetically. Some animals have some predisposed domesticated genes, animals have gen. purpose. Behavioral traits that facilitate domestication: response to humans tame-able. Territorial behavior is minimized, different groups able to overlap home ranges. Regular social grooming activities: adaptability & activity, wide environmental tolerance. Quick learning: willingness to associate with other species. Precocial: hatched or born in an advanced state able to feed itself immediately, independent. Altricial: requiring nourishment after birth or being hatched, dependent. Promiscuos mating (male/female do not form pair bonds) Clear sexual signaling behaviors between males and females to indicate reproductive status.
