In this section we describe some of the applications of radioactive isotopes in the diagnosis of diseases. While in transit, the compound must be stable enough not to undergo chemical reactions that result in its precipitation or rapid elimination from the body. A medicinal chemist can also take advantage of substances that occur naturally in the body, such as antibodies, to carry a diagnostic or therapeutic metal ion to its target. Examples of elements and compounds containing elements from all 18 groups of the periodic table have been identified.
