Some countries" governments are very active in their state"s economies and other countries are more. There are certain areas in which states have intervened in the market traditionally. free trade oriented. Beneficial functions: make the market work better: ex: healthcare, economy is more efficient if more people have access to healthcare. Flu shots- state sponsored and encouraged getting shots: ex: roads, they make trade easier and less expensive, but it can happen without them. Politically generated function: counter ill effects of the market on certain groups: ex: income transfer, attempting to help income disparity between rich and poor. All states perform the essential functions, and most do a least some of the beneficial functions. Universal entitlements: examples: childcare subsidies in europe, public education in the us. Social insurance: the fund: examples: retirement programs like social security, pension. Means-tested public/social assistance: benefits for those below income threshold; sometimes additional conditions, funded through general taxes (ex: income taxes, sales taxes, etc).
