Perhaps what you really need to check the nationalism of nations is some sort of international, legal framework that can serve as a mechanism for international conflict resolution. Ex: enlightenment value that technology was going to improve society is subverted because technology during the war was used to destroy society. Clearly demonstrates that science and technology can be used for good but also for evil. Also, human society was supposed to be advancing over time, but wwi shattered all notions of improvement. Humans have a deep-seated tendency towards violence.
