Unit 11: science, technology and wwi: wwi was a 20 th century war fought with 19 th century tactics . Attitudes towards science and tech, the role tech played in determining victory, moral and ethical questions. Wwi (1914-1918): 10m lives lost, 4 (or 2?) times more wounded. Often called the great war or war to end all wars because at that time, people never believed a war of this scale could ever happen again: many deaths in this time were preventable. Understanding the role of science and technology in wwi in large part is based on understanding the mixed attitudes people had towards technology and the problems associated with battle strategy. Wwi military also had to figure out the characteristics of a new technology and then decide how it should be used. The incompatibility of old-fashioned strategies and newer technologies is one reason why there were so many unnecessary deaths in wwi.
